The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded program to ensure children and teens in low-income areas have access to nutritious meals when school is not in session, primarily during the summer months.
In summer 2019, Virginia had a total of 149 sponsoring organizations.
Since schools operate a food service program throughout the school year, they’re naturally set up to operate a program during the summertime. Non-school organizations may also sponsor the SFSP. In Virginia, non-school sponsoring organizations range from food banks, Boy & Girls Clubs, local parks and rec departments, even religious affiliated organization.
