River Street Market in Petersburg Virginia
By Cheryl Bursch
River Street Market was founded and started up by 3 local business owners in 2017. During the first season Richard Cuthbert took over as owner/founder and hired Cheryl Bursch as Market Manager in July of that year. We had a successful 2nd season with live music, pet adoptions, health and wellness events along with Kids Day! Averaged 25- 30 vendors per market day. River Street was able to join Virginia Fresh Match and can now offer SNAP matching dollars! In the 3rd season River Street has successfully transitioned to a non- profit market with 501(c)3 status. We look forward to many events and new programs this season.
Our location is adjacent to the Historic Farmer’s Market Building (City Market, also known as Farmers Market, is an historic public market located at 9 East Old Street in Petersburg, Virginia. It was built in 1878-1879, and is an octagonal brick building. It measures 93 feet in diameter and is surrounded by a large metal canopy supported on elaborate iron brackets.[3] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.[1] It is located in the Petersburg Old Town Historic District.) We are located in a very large gravel lot amongst the cobblestones and even stretch underneath the Historic Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge. We have water, electricity, portable restroom on site. Live music, prepared foods and as many as 35 vendors. We are also an art community and share our farmers market with local artisans. Our hours are 9am – 1pm and we accept credit, debit and SNAP EBT at the market booth.
